Call of Duty: Mobile was launched by its publisher Activision Blizzard on 1 October.
The mobile version of the Call of Duty video game franchise recorded 100 million downloads in its first week, Sensor Tower reported Tuesday, crushing previous masters including Fortnite and PUBG Mobile.
Indeed, PUBG Mobile, Fortnite and Apex Legends had totalled 28 million, 22.5 million and 25 million respectively in their first week of release.
"This is by far the biggest mobile game launch in history in terms of the player base that was built in the first week," said Randy Nelson, head of mobile news at Sensor Tower.
These figures would reflect unique downloads worldwide from the Apple App Store and Google Play during this period.
As detailed in our article, the title remains a device-specific first-person shooter, thus retaining its identity. The console-based editions of the game have always been faithfully followed, but the meteoric rise of free-to-play online games has forced companies to adapt and develop their games for the small screen.
Call of Duty was developed for mobile by Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings, also a shareholder in PUBG's Bluehole and Fortnite's Epic Games. It is also credited with popularising the battle-royal format, where dozens of online players battle to the death.
The US was the main customer for the mobile edition, accounting for 17% of downloads in its launch week, followed by India, where PUBG Mobile has a strong presence. Tencent has yet to launch the game in China. Activision, which will launch the next console edition of "Call of Duty" on 25 October, has described 2019 as a transition year.
