After the success of the Nintendo Switch version of Octopath Traveler, Square Enix has just announced the Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent release on Android and iOS. Let's review our first impressions of this JRPG with a retro design, but which integrates modern mechanics adapted to the mobile support.
The release of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent on Android and iOS
Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent release on mobile offers a game that mixes traditional RPG with more modern gacha mechanics. This title is not a port of the original game, but a brand new exclusive adventure, which is a prequel to the Switch game in which some of the characters can be found.
After a long introduction to recontextualize the lore of the license, we are asked to choose between three cards. They represent the Orsterra's three major factions, each of which is associated with a value: wealth, power and popularity.
By improving your rank in the three factions you can earn rewards such as rubies or stat bonuses. If your rank is high enough, it can also allow you to get information from NPCs.
Fans of the game on Switch will be delighted to find the same pixel art graphics, with very neat 3D scenery.
A gameplay and an economic system adapted to the mobile
With the Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent release, we discover a classic RPG game system. You must complete missions to obtain rewards and experience to improve your heroes' stats.
The movements are automated. You just have to slide your finger in a direction or select a destination directly if you have already reached it before. While you are moving, you can be attacked at any time.
To prepare for battle, you must compose your team, which can be up to eight fighters. You'll need to unlock characters using rubies, among other things. Each of them has a rarity level of one to five stars and some can earn an extra one by gaining experience.
For non-English speakers, there is no option to change the language and the subtitles are only in English. This can be very disturbing, as the game has long narration phases and dialogue choices.
That's it for our first impressions of the release of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. If you also want to try Octopath Traveler: CotC, head to the Google Play Store or theApp Store to download it right now. If you have pre-registered, you will find in your messages rewards, including 5,000 gold coins and 300 Rubies.
