Whatever the platform, the world of video games is plagued by cheaters. This scourge does not spare the world of mobile gaming and Niantic has massively banned those who do not respect the rules. The American giant has paid particular attention to cheating on Pokémon GO, but has also dealt with cases of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and AR game Ingress.
Niantic detailed impressive figures on its blog with over 5 million bans in the year 2020. The community should appreciate this purge especially since 20% of the cases (or 1 million cheaters) were permanently punished by a permaban. Cheh, karma has struck.
The most innocent souls are probably wondering what motivates cheaters. The answer is simple: the lure of profit and the taste for the least effort. Cheating Pokémon GO and Wizard Unite is mostly about geolocation. Both games mix the real and virtual worlds by using the GPS signals of your phones. But some clever people take advantage of this to move around in the game illegally... Without taking the slightest step IRL. This method allows you to collect as many items as possible from all the Pokéstops in your city, to meet an infinite number of Pokémon or hatch your eggs over and over again.
Niantic does not just ban people, but tries to educate them. The American company notes that more than 90% of players warned once never return to the dark side of the force. So there is still a glimmer of hope in humanity. 😅
However, the American giant is aware that cheaters are becoming more imaginative every day in finding new methods. It's not always easy to keep up, even with the creation of new technologies and the expansion of its anti-cheat team. Niantic is therefore asking for help from its community: don't hesitate to report suspicious behaviour and players who don't respect the rules.
