What exactly is a mobile RPG?

A mobile RPG, whether on Android or iOS, is a role-playing game. You play as a character, often a knight, a wizard, an archer, etc. You start at the lowest level, almost naked, and as the story progresses and you complete quests, you progress and equip your character. You start at the lowest level, almost naked, and as the story and quests progress, you progress and equip your character. RPGs offer a lot of resources to collect, whether to improve your skills, your equipment, make items, etc.

The popularity of this type of game is well established on consoles and for good reason RPGs are extremely immersive. On mobile, it's the same thing, except that you can go on an adventure anywhere; on public transport, in a queue, in the toilet, etc. This time, we're not talking about casino games, puzzles, gacha or video games where the characters fight on their own. Mobile RPG games have little to envy console titles in terms of story, combat and mechanics.

The 12 best iOS and Android mobile RPGs of the moment

To help you choose your next adventure, we've scoured many worlds to come up with this top 12 list of the best mobile RPG games. Of course, it's not exhaustive and a bit subjective, but we've taken into account neutral elements such as platform reviews, game activity, release date, etc. to avoid a significant bias. You won't find pay to win games or titles with gacha mechanics like Genshin Impact nor licenses such as Final Fantasy or Trial of Mana because of their high price. However, Oceanhorn 2 is only available on iOS, but you can still play the first game on Android.

Battle Chasers : Nightwar

Battle Chasers : Nightwar
Battle Chasers : Nightwar

Ranking second in the top RPG games on iOS and Android, Battle Chasers : Nightwar is a truly successful mobile port. The title is adapted from the eponymous comic book by Joe Madueira, who also handled the art direction for the Darksiders saga. Unsurprisingly, you are immersed in a resolutely dark atmosphere.

As for the story, you go on an adventure to find your missing father. Five colourful heroes accompany you: a fallen paladin, a former war golem, an old magician, a bounty hunter and a demon hunter. They each have their own abilities and items. Your quest will not be easy, especially because of the machinations of a vile necromancer!

The clashes are taking place in turn-based. The combat system is rather demanding and offers dynamic moments of action, where you must use all your resources to defeat your enemies. To improve your equipment, you can use advanced crafting. In addition to dungeons of increasing difficulty, there are other activities available to you: fishing, exploration, quests to hunt rare monsters, arenas with waves of enemies, etc.

Battle Chasers Nightwar is not free, however, and you will need to pay $9.99 to play it on Android and iOS.

Mighty Quest For Epic Loot

Mighty Quest For Epic Loot
Mighty Quest For Epic Loot

Mighty Quest for Epic Loot has been named the third best mobile RPG. The action RPG developed by Ubisoft takes you to the world of Opulencia, where castles float in the sky and hold incredible treasures! Nearly 100 unique environments await you; a cursed cathedral, a haunted pirate ship, etc. The atmosphere of the title is, to say the least, zany thanks to its very creative bestiary, its colourful settings and above all a good dose of humour.

As for the gameplay, get ready to face hordes of monsters in this cartoonish hack'n slash. In order not to perish prematurely, your hero will have to become as strong as possible. To this end, the mobile game offers more than 1000 pieces of equipment. There are no classes in Mighty Quest for Epic Loot ; you shape your hero! With this, you will enjoy a huge single player campaign, regular events and a multiplayer arena. In short, there's plenty of fun to be had for hours on end.

In addition to the extensive single-player campaign, there are several game modes, an arena to train and compete against other players, weekly events and challenges, and more.

Blade Bound is a title designed for smartphones, with 3D graphics, neat special effects and fluid gameplay that have little to envy to a console game.

The Pathless
The Pathless

We end this top of the best mobile RPGs with The Pathless. Let yourself be carried away in a contemplative and bewitching adventure thanks to its graphics, but also its soundtrack. The Pathless transports you in the skin of a master archer and his eagle. Together, you explore a mystical island, invaded by evil spirits and cursed beasts. Passionate about fantasy and science-fiction, I am constantly exploring many worlds in my head, in my texts and of course in video games! These last few months, it's Genshin Impact that takes up part of my days... But I also enjoy card games, fighting games, management games, manga, series, movies, etc.
